Can someone explain MR2’s values?

Im in the market for a second “play” car. The MR2 sounds nice. mid engine, rear wheel, 200 hp stock in the turbo version. sounds good. My problem is this. Im in no hurry and shopping around and the value for the avg. mr2 is close to twice what any value index rates it.

I have been looking on ebay, autotrader.com, and Craigslist all thru Cali. And I would say the asking price for this similar car is well over $5K most over $6k.

I understand that some of these MR2’s have aftermarket racing gear on them, many of those go for $8k and up. But not all. many are stock or have a rebuilt engine. not an custom engine swap and new greddy turbo. a rebuilt engine doesnt really add value does it? I mean it was worn from racing anyways, right? Most of the people Ive talked to are firm on their price or wont get close to bluebook. What gives? and why wouldnt Kelly’s and NADA adjust their values if the real market price is much higher. I really dont want to buy a $6K car that my insurance will give me $3K for when i lose the rear end and wrap it around a tree! :) Any ideas?

I don’t know much about cars I am sorry. But all I have to say is that MR2s are SWEEEEEEEEEET

You shouldn’t have too much to worry about it.

Cars like the MR2 are always priced well above what they are actually worth, so go and look through the private sales and meet the sellers face to face. Have a talk with them, and get the price down.

A rebuilt engine shouldn’t add to much to the price.

They are pretty rare in good condition and they are great track cars so people will charge a premium.

the prices are a bit higher than their supposed to be

MR2’s are just fun to drive for those that like to drive, that’s why there a bit more expensive

just like they all stated….but there are those who know that its a collectors item or you could say rare to get one …so they jack up the price…just like the supra…its only worth about 7-12g but you will find some in the 35g area…and you could always put a little bit more money into it and have the insurence company re-adjust the value for you…just like refinancing your home…well sort of…
